Updates from Framingham

During this winter’s cold snaps, the geothermal network in Framingham delivered steady heat to its connected homes and buildings, even when outdoor temperatures dropped below zero. All while the fiber optic monitoring cables that HEET installed hundreds of feet deep into the Framingham bedrock produced continuous ground temperature data. “This winter provided an excellent test for the system. In simple terms, it has confirmed that the bedrock is really a rock solid source of thermal energy,” said Zeyneb Magavi.
And…there is enough ground to go around! The thermal neighborhood is expanding! In late 2025 HEET began work, together with our partners, on the construction phase of a federal award for a second thermal loop in Framingham, which will connect to the existing loop. This project is expected to double the size of the system at significantly less cost than the first. It will also test a new collaboration model: Eversource will build the utility infrastructure, including distribution pipes and boreholes, and HEET will lead the building retrofits. We’re now working hard on finalizing design and are preparing for outreach and construction to begin.
